Frequently Asked Questions

A. If my photographs are fuzzy or small, can you use "artistic licence" to make-up the missing detail? I can make changes to improve poor composition and restore cropped elements (like hands and feet, etc), but I cannot reproduce the detail of a face I have never seen before (except in your photos). I do not normally accept commissions if the photographs supplied are too fuzzy or small (see my Taking and Selecting Photos page).

A. Can you change the person's hair or clothing? Yes - if you can provide supplementary photographs that show details of a different hair style or type of clothing.

A. Do you undertake nudes? Yes - so long as the image is not pornographic or hateful.

A. Can you produce artwork from a description only (e.g. original graphics)? Yes - but my fees and payment terms are different to those described elsewhere in this web site. Please contact me for further information.

A. Can I ask you to make changes to the finished drawing/painting if there is some detail that I feel is not quite right? I always work on a picture until I've got it right - for as long as that may take. When you see the finished picture, it will have been completed to the best of my ability. I am willing to undertake very minor rework, but would ask customers to appreciate that this activity is effectively 'unpaid work'. The scope for corrections is always limited, as dry media work is 'fixed' during the drawing/painting process (i.e. sprayed with alcohol to prevent smudging, and allow further build-up of colours), and watercolour can only be erased with limited success (dependant on the pigment colour).

A. Do you charge extra for drawings/paintings of more than one person? No - I work on the basis that 'a picture is a picture' and producing several smaller faces does not take significantly more time than one larger one. The guide prices quoted on the pages of this site are generally only exceeded if radical changes to the image are required, which necessitate preliminary sketches.

A. Do you charge extra for detailed backgrounds? Yes - a further 50% in addition to detailed prices; complex backgrounds can take longer to complete than the main subject.

I can accept payment from UK customers by personal cheque, plus major credit/debit cards via PayPal Link opens in a new window (preferred) and Nochex Link opens in a new window. For overseas customers I can accept payment via PayPal (in either UK £s, US Dollars, or Euros) or International Money Orders in UK £s.

A. Can you quote me a price in a currency other than UK sterling? Yes - just tell me what country you live in, or try using this on-line currency converter Link opens in a new window.

A. If I need a finished drawing by (date?); what's the deadline for me to get a photograph to you? The answer to this question varies according to how much work I have scheduled. Generally allow at least 3 or 4 weeks (longer before Christmas). I always discuss deadlines with the customer so that they can be confident they will get their picture on time, and don't take-on the commission if I can't guarantee to meet a deadline.

A. Can you supply printed copies of your artwork? I am not able to offer prints at the moment (hardware problems!).

A. How do you send artwork; do you use tubes? I never use tubes. Original artwork is normally provided in a computer-cut mount, and flat-packed in a sandwich of 5 to 6 sheets of recycled cardboard.

A.How much does postage normally cost? Postage cost are detailed at the foot of the Price Summary page.

A. What's the biggest size picture you can send overseas before the cost of shipping gets very expensive? Artwork measuring less than 35" (height + width) can be send via International Airmail. The cost is typically about £12 to somewhere like the USA. This includes insurance cover against accidental loss or damage in transit. The cost of anything bigger jumps to about £40, again using the USA as an example destination. If you live overseas, let me know and I will give you a quote for shipping costs at the outset of your enquiry.
